Characters
The Shadowhawk is a fictional character who was a superhero in the early nineties. He was a member of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and the Tomorrow Syndicate. His mission was to fight crime and supervillains on the streets.
His first appearance was in Rob Liefeld’s Youngblood #2. His brother, Paul, would later become the Shadowhawk.
Johnstone’s half-brother, Hojo, was a drug addict and had contracted AIDS. When Paul discovered the virus, he became an anti-crime vigilante.
Paul was attacked by a mobster who was infected with HIV. To avoid being infected, he used special drugs to slow down the disease. In the end, he died from AIDS.
Paul was a lawyer and a district attorney. He refused to take bribes from the mob. But when his father passed away, he almost turned to crime.
Career
The Shadowhawk has been around for many years as the Spirit of Justice. He has been associated with Shi, Youngblood, Vampirella, and the Wildcats. There have been hundreds of people who have worn the guise of the Shadowhawk.
In the beginning, the Shadowhawk was a very different character. He was a harsh vigilante who fought crime. However, he had no dedicated following. He appeared in several early Image titles.
The Shadowhawk was created by Jim Valentino. He began his career in the indie scene in the 1970s. But his name wasn’t well known in the mainstream comics industry. His career didn’t last long. Thankfully, his creation was revived in the 1990s by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
He was a part of the Silver Age comics. He also appeared in the Big Bang Comics series.
AIDS battles
The Shadowhawk is an unsung hero in the comic book industry. He is a former district attorney who was forced to become a vigilante after contracting HIV from his half-brother. However, AIDS has not stopped him from doing what he can to stop crimes and injustice.
Although he is not the first African-American superhero, he does have a unique story. Originally named Paul Johnstone, the man contracted HIV from his half-brother, Hojo. Sadly, he was a drug addict.
As a virtuous man, he refused to take bribes from the mob, even as his life began to decline. At some point, he became a lawyer and eventually a district attorney.
After his father’s death, he was taken under the wing of Richard Woodroe. It was there that he met his half-brother, Hojo. Hojo suffered from AIDS, and needed help.
Resurrection
In honor of his 20th anniversary, Dan Wickline revived the Shadowhawk. While this wasn’t a reboot, it did bring back his iconic costume, as well as some of the original cast. It also introduced the newbies, including Hawk’s Shadow and Nocturn. They would become mainstays of the Brigade and WildC.A.T.s, respectively.
The Silver Age ShadowHawk, of course, has some catching up to do. His latest iteration has a son, Squirrel, along with a daughter, Lady ShadowHawkette. On top of that, the title character is now working out of a swanky basement hideaway called the Shadowcave. Hopefully, this will lead to a few more decades of action, as opposed to the last 20 years of stale crime.
However, the real challenge is to find a new audience. As such, Image Comics has announced a teaser that should get the juices flowing.
Fight with Supreme
One of the first super-heroes to be HIV positive was the Shadowhawk. He was created by a group of young artists at Image comics in the 90s. They were a pioneer in several areas, including the street justice and violence of comics.
